ABOUT STARTING OUT RIGHT
The excitement and promise of a new school year is synonymous with the purchasing of a new backpack and essential school supplies. Yet, for many Piatt County children, having those simple back-to-school basics is just not a reality.
Starting Out Right (SOR), is a division of A Small Hand Infant Needs and Diaper Pantry. SOR began in April 2014, setting a modest goal of fulfilling fifty backpacks. By June, we increased the number, and by August 2014, we had distributed 257 filled backpacks for Piatt County enrolled students, pre-K through high school, to start out their school year on the right path.
The backpacks are custom filled based on each child's grade level and their school's supply list. This way each child is given the best opportunity to start out right in August.
As word has continued to spread throughout the county, more families have discovered the available services provided through A Small Hand. Year two, 2015, we distributed 292 filled backpacks. Year three, 2016, we distributed 312 filled backpacks. Year four, 2017, we distributed 327 filled backpacks. This year, 2018, we again anticipate filling over 300 backpacks for Kindergarten - 12th grade (pre-K if a list exists).
Many people ask "How can I help?" The answer is simple, you can offer a monetary donation, you may purchase items from the list, you can volunteer to help us directly, and/or help by creating your own supply drives (with friends or an organization you belong to).
